Apparent act of vandalism causes sewage spill near apartment complex
A bowling ball stuffed inside a manhole cover near Milwaukie has caused a sewage spill on property occupied by the Miramonte Lodge Apartment complex located at 12200 SE McLoughlin Blvd. Clackamas County Service District No. 1 (CCSD #1) has notified the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Maintenance crews have cleared the blockage and are cleaning up the spill.
At this time there is no information about how much sewage spilled or how long the spill existed before it was discovered by neighbors and reported Tuesday. Ongoing sampling and testing should determine that information.
In addition to the cleanup, as a precaution CCSD #1 has placed signs and issued other notices near the Milwaukie boat launch and along Kellogg Lake. The public should avoid contact with the walking trails near the spillage site for at least 48 hours and not before the signage is removed. CCSD will continue public outreach to residents of the area as needed.
CCSD #1 is the sewer and watershed health management provider for a large portion of urban unincorporated North Clackamas County, Happy Valley and the western edges of Damascus.
